Monday Morning Drawing Group

Originally, they met and were part of watercolor pencil class in 2017 at Rockland Center for the Arts. With the Covid closedown of the world in March 2020 this small group of ladies found they needed to still connect. With the changing world and the introduction of video chat they found they were able to still get together and draw via Zoom - and Monday Morning Colored Pencil Group started.
Once a week they connect in their own home studios, kitchens, dining rooms and dens. Many times, still in pajamas –sharing family stories, book and movie reviews, insights, and opinions, all the while drawing together. Sometimes on a group project, other times on individual pieces.
Now that the Covid close down is over, they have added another component once a month they meet in person to share and critique their art pieces over a cup of coffee. They have become a close-knit group of supportive wonderful friends who create some great art together.

My appreciation for the visual arts began when I was a teenager, when I fell in love with so many wonderful artists from the Impressionist Era. My interest focused primarily on the women I observed in Figurative Art, i.e., those paintings in which people were included. Four years ago, while vacationing in Florida, I had enrolled in a Beginning Watercolor class at the Art School of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, which provided the introduction and basics I needed to begin painting in this medium I loved. Watercolor soon became a new niche for me. While many artists concentrate their art on landscapes, urban scenes, abstracts, and florals, the emphasis of my body of work is on figurative paintings. Most often, I still am attracted to the people on the paper, rather than to the scene itself, as they all seem to have something important to say to us!

Rik is a Rockland-based photographer.
Artist's statement
The natural world is constantly changing–from season to season, hour to hour, minute to minute. A scene that fills me with wonder may only last a few seconds. But being ready to “capture” it can involve hours of preparation and, yes, lots of patience. Fine-tuning the image on the computer can then require hours more as I try to recreate the complex allure of that initial scene. Being able to share that magical moment with others, however, makes all of the effort worthwhile.
Photography has been an ongoing passion of mine, and I majored in it at the Philadelphia College of Art before career opportunities took me in the direction of writing and editing. While on the editorial staff of such national publications as the New York Times, Consumer Reports, Motor Trend, and others, I was able to continue honing my photography–through staff assignments, freelance projects, or personal explorations–focusing primarily on travel, adventure, cars, and nature imagery.
I’ve photographed in most U.S. states and more than 25 countries, ranging from Iceland to Borneo. But when the pandemic made traveling more difficult, I refocused my efforts on the Lower Hudson Valley, where I live. I wanted to find the wondrous moments and inspiring beauty in the lakes and parks that are right outside our doors. That’s still my main focus, and all of the photographs in this exhibit were taken in the Rockland County area.

Tina Traster
"American Beauty"

Tina Traster is a socially conscious, award-winning journalist, author, filmmaker, and photographer. Traster is also the Editor/Publisher of the Rockland County Business Journal. Traster's documentary films have played in festivals worldwide; Catnip Nation garnered several awards. Her written work and photography have appeared in scores of newspapers, magazines, blogs, and literary journals including The New York Times, The New York Post, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, The Atlantic, The Federalist, Redbook, Family Circle, Parade, Time Out New York, Audubon, Ski Magazine, and many others. She is the author of the award-winning memoir Rescuing Julia Twice: A Mother's Tale of Russian Adoption and Overcoming Reactive Attachment Disorder. Since 2006, Traster wrote the long-running "Burb Appeal" column for The New York Post.
