The Walrus is Only the Beginning

This book is a wild ride full of action, mystery, science fiction, and humor! The story follows Noah Prime, a 14 year old who is just trying to get through school without weird things happening to him, like completely freezing and falling over when confronted by bullies. He even fell out of a tree (how did he even get up there?!) and onto his classmate Sahara! And then he started squawking at her during the school dance. Could this get any more weird? Apparently, it can. Noah’s friend Ogden has a few theories about what might be happening to Noah…but all those theories have to be tested somehow. When Noah realizes that there are some mysterious people who seem intent on killing him, he and his friends set out to determine what is really causing all of Noah’s strange animal-like behaviors. Could the answer be related to the people that are after him?

What follows is an intensely funny, often thrilling, and very wacky story that involves everything from aliens to aardvarks. One of the reasons I loved this book was how funny it was. Noah gets into all kinds of incredible situations that he must think (or fight) his way out of using all kinds of animal related tactics. His friends Ogden and Sahara are great characters, and Ogden’s point of view in particular can be very funny. There’s also lots of action and cool sci-fi technology. I even learned some fun facts about a few (real) animals. If that wasn’t enough, I also thought it brought up some very interesting questions about the meaning of family, individuality, and our own places in the universe.

I'm so happy it's the first book in a planned series (The N.O.A.H files), because I will definitely be picking up the sequel. To be honest, I really haven’t read anything quite like this book! If you’re familiar with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, this book has a very similar tone. If you want a book that will make you laugh AND keep you on the edge of your seat, this is a great selection. One thing is for sure, you will never see the end coming!
