A Thirst Quenching Read

khohlfeld

Here’s one for the romantics! A bookish, proper boy gets turned into a vampire while a strong-willed girl with a hot temper tries to prove herself as a vampire hunter? You know this is a great set-up for some intense star-crossed love. We meet Lalo right at the beginning, deep in despair as he tries to find the monster who killed his parents. When his plan of revenge goes awry and Lalo becomes what he most despises (a sediento), he is determined to find the root of this vampirism and stamp it out. To do so, he and his sister must journey north to the mysterious pueblo that seems to be the key to this mystery. This pueblo is home to Carolina and her family, well-known in town for being the premier vampire-hunters that keep the pueblo safe. While Carolina’s father might want to marry her off and keep her away from the dangers, Carolina is determined to prove herself as a vampire slayer and not at all inclined to marriage. When the two collide, sparks will fly and blood will spill.

There were a lot of things about this book that I liked. The plot was well constructed, combining elements of fantasy, mystery, romance, and historical fiction. I honestly adored Lalo and Carolina. They are very different people, but their common enemy and their family loyalties keep pulling them back together. Their dialogue together is often tense, occasionally flirty, and always engaging. It was so fun to see them start to understand each other despite all of their differences in demeanor. The atmosphere of the pueblo and the dangers that lurk at the fringes give this story an exciting edge, and you’re held in suspense as you wonder how these two can possibly make a relationship between a human and a vampire work.

Overall, this is an enjoyable and romantic adventure with lots of twists and turns. There is plenty of action thanks to the blood-thirsty vampires in play, so the whole novel feels pretty thrilling. The cover pretty much says it all! If you are interested in a unique vampire story with two endearing main characters, this one might be right for you.
