What a ride! This story stars Mar, a transmasc nonbinary pirate who is also hiding a magical secret. Growing up on the sea, Mar has seen a lot of things. But what can they do when el Diablo comes to collect their father’s soul? Mar makes a deal with the demon to save their father and their crew, but Mar’s magic might not be enough to defeat El Diablo alone. Mar finds allies in the most unlikely of places, and sets out on an epic and dangerous quest to save them all.
One of my favorite things about this book was the diverse group of characters. From a magical teen to a snarky demon to a cocky (and very cute) pirate, these characters had me hooked. I was never sure what was going to happen next! The dialogue was often very witty, even when the characters were in dire circumstances. I was really invested in Mar’s success, probably because they were such an engaging character. Even when Mar feels like they can’t succeed, someone is there to pick them up and keep fighting. Pirates, magic, demons, high stakes, a touch of romance, and a very satisfactory ending. What else could you ask for?
I loved the characters and the journey so much that I would definitely read another adventure starring this crew. Good news on that front! Check out “The Diablo’s Curse”, which follows one of the main characters in “The Wicked Bargain” on an all-new adventure to break a curse.
